Florida Keys backcountry forecast June 29 – July 1
I’m sure everybody is tired of the rainy and windy conditions tropical storm Debby gave us for what seems forever. It was a good week to go over your tackle and equipment making sure everything is ready for a hot summer bite. With the weather forecasted to get better for the weekend, the fishing in the Florida Keys will be on fire! Redfish, Snook and Trout will be around Island flats, channels and runoffs in the Flamingo area with some Tarpon and Sharks in the mix. Fishing soft plastics like Berkley Gulp baits in these areas will get you in the action. The area from East Cape Sable to middle Cape has good number of Redfish, Snook, Trout and a few Tarpon as well. Work the beach with artificial baits to cover some ground and locating the fish. Keep your eyes open for floating Tripletails in the same area. The windy conditions we had most of the week in the Gulf will push some of this tasty fish closer to the beach. The Trout bite has been best in the northern parts of the Everglades National Park, look for Mullet muds around basins and banks for the best action. If the skies clear up for the weekend look for sight fishing in the Island flats for Redfish to be very productive throughout the Everglades National Park. Well presented Jerk baits rigged wheedles will get the bites.
The Tarpon fishing throughout the Keys should be getting back to normal as the weather conditions improve for the weekend. Bridges and adjacent channels will be best at low light hours with the outgoing tide. Live baits like Mullet, Pilchards and Ladyfish drifted or anchored during day time hours will get the bites. When the Sun goes down drift medium size Crabs on the same channels for the best action. Bone fishing remains best early morning and later in the afternoon. Look for Permit to be cruising the deeper edges of the local banks and flats on the incoming tide. The bridges and surrounding structure is a good place to find Permit on the slack and beginning of the incoming tides. I am looking forward to better weather conditions for the weekend and great fishing.
