Florida Keys backcountry fishing report June 2013

Hello everyone! I'm sure everybody is been getting in to the great bite going on right now in the Florida Keys backcountry. The mainland and Island shorelines from Key Largo to Flamingo are producing great action of Redfish and Snook with some nice Tarpon in the mix. This fish are eating artificial's like Berkley Jerk baits rigged weedless really well. Look for the mullet muds in the adjacent basins for a decent Trout bite while drifting and casting soft plastics under a popping cork. If you are not getting the bites on the corks take them off and work the baits close to the bottom. The Flamingo area continues to be productive with Snook,Trout and Redfish. Look for some Tarpon and big Sharks along the deeper channels. A live or dead Ladyfish has been getting good action. The Snook fishing has been great for anglers working the mainland shoreline from Flamingo west and up the coast. Fish the broken trees and points with live Pinfish or trolling motor along the shoreline while casting artificial's. Take good care releasing this fish and watch out for the big sharks that are probably going to be following you waiting to steal your catch. Best thing to do is to move to a different spot after the Sharks show up. Don't forget the bug spray you will regret it!
Out on Gulf waters the wrecks are providing for an action packed day of fishing. From rod benders by the thousand to a big school of Permit and the occasional Cobia. You never know what might show up. Drop a bait on the bottom and a Giant Goliath Grouper will teach you a lesson. The Trout bite continues to be excellent around the Park boundaries. Drift the grassy areas in and out of the Park specially from Oxfoot to Sprigger banks for a chance to catch the Trout of a lifetime. Some nice Grey Snappers have been also eating the white bucktails bounced on the bottom.

Bone fishing has really heated up all over the keys. Anglers have been founding schools of fish tailing on the low incoming tide around Oceanside flats. Look for puffs of mud when the water rises as the fish dig on the bottom in search for food. Good luck finding decent size shrimp on the bait store so a small live Crab will work just fine. Permit fishing continues to be great for the anglers stalking the deeper edges of flats and banks both Oceanside and bayside. The Tarpon fisherman are getting their fare share of bites while fishing the local channels throughout the keys. Live or dead baits coupled with a little patience will get you hooked up. Live Crabs drifted thru a bridge channel on the outgoing tide when the sun goes down will pretty much guaranty you a bite. It's been really hot out there so don't forget to bring lots of water, have some fun and keep fishing!
