Florida Keys backcountry fishing report  August 10-12, 2012

It's that time of the year were not only the temperature but the fishing in the Everglades National Park can get extremely Hot. The Redfish are swarming in the park, specially on the shallow flats. Jerk baits rigged wheedles have been proven deadly with mostly every fish you encounter not refusing it. Keep your eyes open when working the mainland and island shorelines for schools of big Jack,s cruising through. Just be quick to react and put a bait in front of them, they move quick and they mean business, lots of hard fighting fun to be had.The area around Flamingo remains very productive both shallow and in the deeper channels and run-offs. Great catches of Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, Sharks and Trout are there to be had. Work the deeper channels and run-offs with 1/4 oz jigs with Gulp baits on the last of the outgoing tide and beginning of the incoming tide, then concentrate on the shallower areas as the water rises. The Mainland shoreline from Flamingo to middle Cape is a great place to be with your trolling motor. Work the shoreline with artificial baits and Snook, Trout, Reds and some Tarpon will end up at the end of you line. The Gulf is a go to place this time of the year for some incredible action. Big Trout, Snappers, Ladyfish, Sharks and many others are there to be caught. Work white buck tail jigs behind the boat on your drift bouncing them on the bottom, adjust the jig’s weight to the speed of your jig. If the grass is not to bad cast top water lures behind the boat for some explosive bait. The Wrecks and structure in the gulf has been holding schools of Permit and Goliath Groupers with the occasional Cobia showing up. Snappers and many other action packed species are also present to top in a great fun bite.
The bonefish bite remains great on the Oceanside flats with many Permit catches reported as well. Fish the high incoming and high outgoing tides for the best action. Both Bonefish and Permit have been cruising around 2 to 4 ft of water, small crabs well presented will get you hooked up. The Tarpon bite on bridges and channels through out the Keys remains solid. Dead baits on the bottom will get the bites on the daytime and medium size crabs drifted under a cork with the outgoing tide have been producing the best action in the dark. So get out of the AC and get out on the water for some great hot fishing!
