Florida Keys backcountry fishing report August 2-8

It's been Hot out there and so has the fishing. There is one fish that doesn't mind the heat and that's the Redfish. Almost every Island flat and moat I went to had some Redfish lurking on it. The guides getting in the really skinny spots report big schools of fish wheeling to eat. The mainland shorelines from Key Largo to Cape Sable have been producing great Snook and Redfish catches as well. The deeper channels and run offs around around Flamingo have been best at the last of the outgoing tide and beginning of the incoming with Redfish, Snook,Trout with Sharks and Tarpon as well. When the water gets higher get up on the shallow areas for great Redfish action. Fish Berkley Gulp shrimp on a 1/4oz jig head and Jerk bait rigged wheedles on the shallow areas. The shoreline from East Cape to Middle Cape remains good with Redfish, Snook and Tarpon catches being reported. Out on the western areas of the Everglades National Park there it a great Trout and Snapper bite going on with plenty of other rod benders.

The Tarpon bite remains best at night drifting live medium size Crabs, dead baits on the bottom or live pilchards have been getting there fair number of bites early and later in the daytime hours. The bonefish bite remains best early morning with the colder water temperature with some Permit around the deeper edges of the flats and banks. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated, it's really Hot out there !
